Driving in Ireland

Today is the day, I drove in Ireland. Not only did I drive on the wrong side of the road, with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car, but the weather took a turn for the worse. I drove south into Waterford City, toured the Waterford Crystal Factory (saw actual pieces being blown and etched), then finally found my way to Ardmore (site of the first murder in ‘The Keepers of Eire’) and Duncrone B & B.

Anyone want to buy it for me? Only 1,400 euro or about $2000.

It takes some getting used to driving here. And the roundabouts-Waterford is loaded with them. I wanted to get a picture of the road signs for you to see, but I had to pay attention to where I needed to go while traveling at 60-100 Km/hr. Not an easy task. The street name signs are almost non-existent (even in Dublin this was the case), so I ended up lost a few times and having to backtrack. Needless to say, my terrible sense of direction just had me more confused. I should have added a GPS to the car rental, but they already soaked me when I added insurance (more than doubled the bill-phew). Anyway, I finally got to the B & B around 6pm.

The only place for dinner is the Cliff House Hotel (very expensive, but great food. I had the grilled organic chicken breast with purple-topped broccoli). Before I finished, a decent-sized rain and wind storm hit, making the land on the other side of the cove disappear into the low-lying clouds. I talked up the book with the hotel manager and he’s going to Tweet about it on their website. Cool, huh! Also, I may be able to sit for coffee with the village historian tomorrow. I’ll be touring St. Declan’s Well and Oratory and the round tower tomorrow as well.

I already have notes of things that will need minor revision in the book. Goal #1 of this trip is coming to fruition-authenticate places.

I think I’m going to be in for some nasty weather for the next few days. Several storms sweeping the south and west of Ireland.

I’m planning to head to Cork tomorrow afternoon. I’ll update again soon.
